Inflation Drops To 22.97%, Food Prices Hit 64.4% In Borno

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate for May 2025 has dropped to 22.97 per cent compared to the April 2025 rate of 23.71 per cent, the National Bureau of Statistics has said.

The NBS said in its Consumer Price Index for May 2025 that inflation declined by 0.74 per cent from April 2025.

However, the inflation pressure in Borno State remains elevated at 38.93 per cent while the food inflation in the state rose to 64.36 per cent.

The development is a continuation of the drop in inflation figures since the NBS adjusted the baseline year for inflation.

NBS said the main contributors to the headline inflation were food and non-alcoholic beverages, accounting for 9.20 per cent, while restaurants and accommodation services contributed 2.97 per cent and transport, 2.45%.

Meanwhile, the least contributors were recreation, sport, and culture: 0.07 per cent, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics: 0.09 per cent, and insurance and financial services: 0.11 per cent.

Food inflation rate also dropped in May 2025 to 21.14 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

The report revealed that on a month-on-month basis, the food inflation rate in May rose to 2.19 per cent from 2.06 per cent, which it was in April 2025.

Food inflation increase was driven by rise in average prices of yam, avenger (Ogbono/Apon), Cassava Tuber, Maize Flour, Fresh Pepper, Sweet Potatoes, etc.

On state level, the state with the highest inflation was Borno at 38.93 per cent, Niger 34.97 per cent, and Plateau with 32.35 per cent inflation.

Meanwhile, the lowest rates were in Katsina with 16.25 per cent inflation, Adamawa, 18.20 per cent inflation and Delta with 18.41 per cent.

On food inflation at the state level, NBS said, “State-level analyses of the food index in May 2025 showed that food inflation on a year-on-year basis was highest in Borno (64.36 per cent), Bayelsa (39.85 per cent), Taraba (38.58 per cent).”
