Indegenes of Umuoka Mgbarakuma in Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA of Abia State, have cried out to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Alex Otti and Abia State Ministry of Environment to come to their rescue, following the devastating effects of gully erosion in the community.

They said the erosion has destroyed buildings, economic trees and also swallowed livestock.

Apart from these, the Umuoka Mgbarakuma indigenes said that vast farmland have been destroyed by the expanding gully, pushing poor farmers to hunger and economic displacement.

Speaking on the issue, done of the affected indigenes, Ikechi Nwachukwu and Chidi Brendan, lamented that the erosion has continued to expand despite the coordinated efforts of the traditional ruler of Mgbarakuma, Eze Ebere Ubani, and the President General, Ben Iroakazi, to arrest the problem through communal efforts.

Responding to a question from DAILY POST at a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, Umuahia zone, Mayor of Umuahia South LGA, Chinedu Enwereuzor sympathized with the victims of the ecological crisis.

“Yes, I am aware of the problem but I am engaging the Abia State Ministry of Environment to see what can be done to tackle the problem,” Enweruzor said.
