India Plan Crash Survivor Jumped Out Through Emergency Exit, Police Say
The current sole survivor of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, managed to escape the wreckage by jumping out of an emergency exit, according to the Ahmedabad Police.
Ramesh Viswashkumar, a 40-year-old British national, was travelling with his brother on the London-bound flight when the plane crashed, killing over 290 people.
Viswashkumar, who was seated in seat 11A near the emergency exit, described the horrific scene after the crash, saying, “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.” He suffered injuries and was hospitalised, but is currently receiving treatment.
According to police, Viswashkumar’s brother, Ajay, was seated in a different row, and Viswashkumar asked for help finding him. However, there is no information on Ajay’s whereabouts or condition.
The crash occurred in a residential area, hitting a medical college hostel during lunch hour. Rescue operations are ongoing, and police hope to find more survivors among the injured being treated in hospitals.
Viswashkumar’s family in Britain has confirmed that he is alive and in touch with them, but they are still anxious about his brother’s fate.
“He only said that he was fine, nothing else,” a cousin of Viswashkumar, Ajay Valgi, said.
According to Reuters, Police said Viswashkumar was the sole passenger known so far to have survived, but added that rescue operations were still ongoing.
“Chances are that there might be more survivors among the injured who are being treated in the hospital,” Vidhi Chaudhary, a senior police officer in Ahmedabad, said.
