‘Implementation’ – Electricity customers finger major problem with tariff reduction in Enugu

Electricity consumers have raised major concerns with the recent Band A electricity tariff cut announcement by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Recall that EERC issued a multi-year tariff mandating MainPower, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, to reduce its Band A tariff to N160 per kilowatt-hour from N209, effective from August 1, 2025.

However, acting Director of the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy, Princewill Okorie, said the implementation is the challenge with EERC’s announcement.

According to him, Enugu Disco on several occasions failed to implement rulings of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, noting he is not excited about the tariff cut announcement.

“Reducing the price of band A tariff is not the issue, but the implementation is. EEDC does not obey any law. There have been several rulings and orders by the regulator that the disco refused to implement.

”Announcing the law is one thing; whether the disco will obey is another thing. It is not about noise reduction announcements. I am excited about the reduction,” he told DAILY POST in a recent interview.
This comes as Electricity Distribution Company and General Companies in separate statements condemned EERC’s MYTO MainPower, Enugu Disco.

Similarly, the federal government, through the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had expressed doubt over the capacity of states to implement Band A tariff removal.

The spokesperson to the minister, Tunji, told DAILY POST that the federal government will not recommend electricity tariff removal for states.

Meanwhile, states under the Forum of Commissioners for Power and Energy in Nigeria, FOCPEN, backed EERC’s tariff cut announcement.
