Imo Govt Begins Crackdown On Tinted Commercial Vehicles, Covered Plate Numbers
The Imo State Government has commenced a full-scale crackdown on commercial minibuses (locally known as Keke buses) with tinted glass and covered plate numbers.
The enforcement was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, Hon. Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, in conjunction with security agencies and traffic enforcement units across the state on Monday.
Recall that THE WHISTLER had reported that the state governor in April approved the clampdown on commercial vehicles operating with tinted glasses due to the increasing number of criminal activities perpetrated with them.
Nwaneri, while addressing journalists in Owerri, said that the government is determined to rid the roads of vehicles that flout traffic and security regulations.
“The use of tinted glass or covered number plates by commercial vehicle operators is both illegal and suspicious. It has become a tool for criminals and those who think they can operate above the law.
“We are sending a strong message today: such lawlessness will no longer be permitted in Imo State.”
He clarified that the operation is a component of a larger effort by the administration led by Governor Hope Uzodimma aimed at enhancing public safety, reinstating order on the roads, and curbing activities that promote criminal behaviour.
Nwaneri stated that vehicles detected with tinted windows or obscured license plates will be immediately seized, and their drivers will face legal action.
He cautioned that government surveillance teams are actively monitoring the state and will persist in their operations without prior warning.
“Let every commercial driver take this as a final warning. Any vehicle caught with covered plate numbers or tinted windows will face the full wrath of the law. This government is serious about restoring discipline, order, and security,” he added.
