Immigration Service Hikes Passport Fees
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has revised the cost of obtaining international passports, doubling the fee for a 32-page booklet with 5-year validity from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000.
A 64-page booklet with 10-year validity will now cost ₦200,000, up from ₦100,000.
The new charges will take effect from September 1, 2025, and apply only to applications within Nigeria. The fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page booklet.
Announcing the adjustment, the NIS Public Relations Officer, A.S. Akinlabi, said: “In a bid to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Passport, the Nigeria Immigration Service hereby announces an upward review of Nigerian Standard Passport fees, set to take effect on 1st September 2025.”
This is the second upward adjustment in two years. In August 2024, the service raised the 32-page passport fee from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000 and the 64-page passport from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.
The Nigerian passport system has undergone reforms in recent years. In 2023, then-Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the clearance of a backlog of over 200,000 applications, which was completed within two months. In 2024, the government introduced home delivery of passports to improve accessibility.
These efforts appear to be yielding results, as Nigeria’s passport climbed to its best global ranking in over a decade — 88th out of 199 countries — on the 2025 Henley Passport Index.
