Ikeja Explosion: Five People Injured, Police Begin Investigation
No fewer than five people sustained varying degrees of injuries following an explosion that occurred on Friday evening inside a CCTV camera dealer shop along Kodesho Street, near the ever-busy Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos.
The explosion, which happened at about 6:35 p.m., prompted an immediate response from emergency responders.
According to the spokesperson of the state Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command has commenced investigation into the incident.
Upon arrival at the scene, he said operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Mobile Police Detachment, and conventional police teams swiftly cordoned off the area and conducted a thorough sweep to ensure public safety.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, visited the scene shortly after the incident for an on-the-spot assessment. He assured residents that the Command was fully on top of the situation and urged the public to remain calm.
“While investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the explosion and other factors that might have caused the incident, the general public are enjoined to go about their lawful engagements and businesses peacefully without fear or apprehension, as the scene of the explosion and the adjoining area have been rendered safe and secured,” Hundeyin said in a statement.
The five injured victims, who were reportedly inside and around the shop at the time of the incident, were promptly evacuated and taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical attention.
“The Command hereby wishes to assure the general public of its commitment to continue to maintain peace and security throughout the state,” Hundeyin added.
THE WHISTLER reported earlier that following the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rerouted traffic from General Hospital, underneath the bridge.
A video seen by THE WHISTLER showed a car with shattered glass on the right-hand side. In the video, a woman’s voice could be heard thanking God for saving her life.
“I thought it injured me. Father, I thank you,” she said, as she moved round her car in shock while continuing to express gratitude.
An X user identified as The KVNG (@Teclef) also shared his experience, saying, “I was at the middle of the road, about to cross to the front of the explosion.”
