The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to disrupting cross-border criminal syndicates through enhanced collaboration, intelligence-driven policing, and joint operations.

He spoke at the two-day ongoing 13th Meeting of the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL) Steering Committee, in Algiers, Algeria.

The summit brings together police chiefs, top law enforcement executives, and continental security stakeholders to tackle Africa’s growing challenges of terrorism, violent extremism, and organised crime.

It seeks to strengthen security frameworks across the continent through collaboration and intelligence-sharing, the report signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed.

As Nigeria’s Police Chief and Chairperson of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), Egbetokun emphasised the role of “modern technology, integrated communication platforms, and interagency task forces as pivotal to responding to cross-border threats.”

He also called for “deeper legal harmonisation, improved officer training, and enhanced regional interoperability to effectively combat terrorism, cybercrime, trafficking, and organised criminal networks,” stressing that “the battle against Transnational Organised Crime (TOC) cannot be won in isolation, but through unified purpose, coordinated action, and strategic cooperation.”

Egbetokun pledged the Force’s continued support for AFRIPOL’s mission and affirmed its readiness to work with regional and global partners to ensure peace, safety, and stability across the continent.

The IGP restated the NPF’s commitment to multilateral security efforts that enhance public safety and strengthen Africa’s collective defence mechanisms.

Delegates also received critical briefings on the current state of TOC in Africa, progress in deploying AFRIPOL’s AFSECOM communication system, and strategies for counter-terrorism and TOC response.

The agenda includes updates on AFRIPOL’s internal reform processes, its engagement with African Union (AU) policy bodies, and preparatory measures for the 14th Steering Committee Meeting and the 5th General Assembly.

The meeting had in attendance the Algerian Director-General of National Security, Ali Badaoui, representatives from the Central African Police Chiefs Committee (CAPCCO), Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation (EAPCCO), and other regional police organizations.
