IGP Orders Review Of Amnesty Report On South-East Killings

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive review of Amnesty International’s 128-page report titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria.”

The report accuses the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies of extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses in the region.

In response, Egbetokun on Saturday directed relevant police departments and field formations to carry out a meticulous line-by-line assessment of the allegations.

Egbetokun explained that the review will involve cross-referencing Amnesty International’s claims with internal operational records, intelligence reports, and situation updates from tactical units and police commands across the South-East.

Egbetokun, however, argued that the Nigeria Police Force upholds fundamental rights of citizens, and that past Amnesty reports have contained “factual inaccuracies and sweeping generalisations.”

His response came less than 48 hours after the Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to dismiss the report and instead acknowledge the sacrifices of troops, stressing that “troops gave their today for a safer country of tomorrow.”

The IGP noted that the ongoing review would rely strictly on verifiable facts, operational evidence, and a strong commitment to institutional integrity.

“The current review will be guided by facts, operational evidence, and a dedication to institutional integrity.

“After the review, the Force will issue a detailed and evidence-based response, addressing the specific issues raised in the report,” he said.

The police chief described the review as part of the NPF’s responsibility to respond to constructive criticism, safeguard public trust, and ensure clarity by providing context to allegations.

Reaffirming the Force’s dedication to lawful and accountable policing, Egbetokun said, “The Force continues to enhance its internal accountability mechanisms, improve training in human rights standards, and deepen institutional reforms in line with global best practices.”

He also noted that the NPF is open to engaging with civil society groups, human rights institutions, international partners, and the National Human Rights Commission.

Egbetokun urged stakeholders to handle such sensitive issues with objectivity, factual accuracy, and a balanced understanding of Nigeria’s complex security realities.
