The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed Border Patrol Commanders across the country to intensify efforts in securing Nigeria’s frontiers.

The IGP stressed on their role as the nation’s first line of defence against external threats, charging the commanders to remain proactive in preventing cross-border criminal activities.

According to a statement by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters Abuja, Egbetokun issued the charge on Friday during a conference with the Commanders at the Force Headquarters, Abuja

Egbetokun highlighted the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s borders and maritime corridors linking the country to the Gulf of Guinea.

He commended the unit’s efforts in tackling cross-border crimes but urged them to adopt innovative strategies.

“The Nigeria Police Force cannot tackle 21st-century crimes with 20th-century tools. That is why we must embrace technology—surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, real-time data analysis,” he said.

The IGP also emphasized intelligence-led policing, public trust, and inter-agency collaboration as essential to effective border security. He assured that the welfare of officers and commanders remains a priority under his leadership.
