The Idoma Community in the Diaspora, under the aegis of Idoma Assocaition USA, has pledged increased support for agricultural and security initiatives in Benue South Senatorial District.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the diaspora group’s 29th Annual Convention Held in Houston, Texas, United States of America, 31st July –2nd August, 2025.

The Convention with the theme “Strengthening Agriculture and Enhancing Community Safety in Idomaland,” brought together Idoma sons and daughters from across the globe in a united call for security, agricultural renewal, and accelerated development in Zone C of Benue State.

The event was graced by His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, the Och’Idoma of Idoma Kingdom; the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, represented by the Deputy Governor, Barrister Dr. Sam Ode mni; Rt. Hon. Anthony Agom, Member representing Okpokwu State Constituency; Mr. Mike Oglegba, former Commissioner for Finance; and other distinguished leaders and stakeholders.

In his address, Dr. Prince Edwin Ochai, President of Idoma Association USA, commended His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John’s unifying leadership and declared the diaspora’s firm support for the Idoma Traditional Area Council.

He pledged scaled-up investments in agriculture and security, stressing sustainable farming practices, farmer cooperatives, and technology adoption. He reminded delegates that community safety is paramount for families, businesses, and future growth.

The Och’Idoma, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John emphasised that peace and security are the foundation of Idoma progress. He urged the diaspora to unite in supporting security initiatives and invest in modern agriculture through irrigation, cooperatives, and mechanized farming to unlock the region’s economic potential.

In a similar vein, Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, represented by the Deputy Governor, Barrister Dr. Sam Ode, reaffirmed the Benue State government’s commitment to combating insecurity through specialized squads and vigilante structures. He listed infrastructure projects underway in Zone C, including major roads and the Otobi–Otukpo water rehabilitation, and highlighted agricultural programs such as the ACReSAL Project. He appealed to the diaspora to partner in health, education, and agro-processing ventures.

The Keynote Speaker, Rev Fr. Philemon Adem Okoh, DMV Chapter President and Security Committee Secretary, decried the grave insecurity in Benue South marked by killings, displacement, and farmland seizures. He called for trained and paid vigilante groups in all communities, accountability of leaders, reclamation of seized farmlands, and return of displaced people to their ancestral homes.

In a goodwill message, President General of Ochetoha K’Idoma, Professor Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, congratulated the Idoma Assocaition USA for nearly three decades of resilience and commitment.

He urged innovative agricultural ventures such as cassava-based pharmaceutical starch, nutraceuticals from Okoho, and biotechnology applications. He also emphasised education as a driver of transformation, encouraging the diaspora to help position Idoma’s federal institutions as world-class centers of research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The communiqué read inter alia:

“Security is the foremost priority in protecting the lives, property, and heritage of the Idoma people.

“The Association will collaborate with local stakeholders to modestly support initiatives that enhance security in Benue South.

“Traditional rulers are urged to remain steadfast in defending their people. Any compromise on safety shall attract reprimand, while leaders who safeguard communities will be honored.

“The process of selecting traditional rulers must be transparent, credible, and corruption-free to maintain public trust.

“Agriculture was affirmed as the backbone of Idoma economic revival, with emphasis on irrigation, crop diversification, cooperative societies, and modern farming techniques.

“The diaspora resolved to expand agricultural investments, providing farmers access to tools, inputs, and infrastructure to boost productivity.

“The Benue State Government was urged to prioritize security and infrastructure in Zone C, with a specific call for the completion of the Otukpo Federal Road.

“Elected leaders and public officials must be held accountable for delivering results in both security and development. Those who fail to bring progress should be voted out in 2027.

“Leaders are encouraged to maintain direct contact with their people through visits and engagement.

“Cultural heritage and ancestral values must be preserved and promoted as sources of unity, resilience, and moral guidance.

“Youth employment was identified as critical to addressing insecurity and advancing rapid development.

“The Idoma diaspora reaffirmed its full support for the Idoma Area Traditional Council under the reign of His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, commending his visionary and inclusive plans to unify the idoma kingdom and Idoma sons and daughters across the globe.”

The Convention concluded with renewed resolve to strengthen security, transform agriculture, and promote unity within Idomaland. Delegates reaffirmed their collective responsibility to harness resources, expertise, and networks in shaping a secure and prosperous future for the Idoma people.
