IDF destroys 500m Hamas tunnel in Khan Younis
The Israel Defense Forces, IDF, announced on Thursday that troops from the Golani Brigade had uncovered and destroyed a 500-metre-long Hamas tunnel in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, as part of ongoing operations in the region.
According to the military, the tunnel, which extended 13 metres underground, was demolished by members of the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit.
The tunnel was among several key targets in a week-long campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure in the area.
In a statement, the IDF said the operations had led to the elimination of dozens of enemy operatives and the destruction of more than 130 Hamas “terror infrastructures,” both above and below ground.
Among the destroyed targets were weapons stockpiles, booby-trapped buildings, surveillance outposts, and mortar launching positions, all of which, according to the military, were being actively used by Hamas operatives.
Photographs released by the military show Golani Brigade soldiers in action during the operation, as the IDF continues to push deeper into militant strongholds across southern Gaza.
The operation in Khan Younis forms part of broader efforts to degrade Hamas’s operational capabilities following months of intense combat.
The military has not yet disclosed the number of casualties on either side but stated that the campaign remains ongoing, with continued focus on dismantling tunnel networks and neutralising threats to Israeli forces and civilians.
