Ibom Air: Court Strikes Out FG’s Case Against Comfort Emmanson

An Ikeja Magistrate Court in Ogba, Lagos, on Wednesday discharged Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger accused of unruly conduct and assault on crew members.

Presiding Magistrate Olanrewaju Salami struck out the matter following the withdrawal of the five-count charge earlier filed against Emmanson by the police.

The decision came after the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, announced the government’s decision to end the case.

Keyamo said the move followed consultations with stakeholders in the aviation sector, appeals from well-meaning Nigerians, and evidence of remorse from those involved.

According to the minister, Ibom Air also agreed to withdraw its complaint over the August 10 incident that led to Emmanson’s arrest.

Emmanson was first arraigned on Monday and granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, but was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre after failing to meet the conditions.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, police prosecutor Oluwabunmi Adeitan told the court there were new developments warranting the case’s withdrawal and formally applied to discontinue proceedings.

The court granted the application and formally discharged the defendant.
