The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has announced a postgraduate scholarship programme for Ogoni students, aimed at supporting research work and defraying part of the study expenses for 500 postgraduate students.

THE WHISTLER learnt that this year’s programme sees an increase from 300 beneficiaries in 2024, demonstrating HYPREP’s commitment to investing in young people.

The Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, while addressing Ogoni youths during the scholarship grant sensitisation in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, emphasised the project’s commitment to fairness, merit, and accountability.

“HYPREP remains a project of excellence, and every decision we make, including the scholarship grant, is anchored on fairness, merit, and accountability,” he stated.

Professor Zabbey highlighted the importance of investing in young people, stating, “The future of Ogoni lies in your hands. The scholarship programme is one of the many ways we are working to restore livelihoods, build capacity, and ensure that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommendations are fully implemented.”

He added that the scholarship programme is designed to promote excellence and recognise merit.

“It is designed to promote excellence, support researchers, and recognise merit,” Professor Zabbey noted. “We call for understanding in these times, as the Ogoni people steadily move along the path toward a comprehensively clean environment, restored livelihoods, peace, and economic rebirth.”

The project coordinator also called on all Ogonis, including postgraduate students, to create a conducive environment that ensures the goals of HYPREP are fully realised.

“We must act to promote the common good. All beneficiaries and stakeholders need to understand that processes and procedures form the backbone of HYPREP’s operations,” he emphasised.
