In line with the Federal Government’s directive to ban single-use plastics (SUPs) in all ministries, departments, agencies, and projects, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has established a 16-member Environment Champion Group.

Led by HYPREP Project Coordinator Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, the group was inaugurated at the Project Coordination Office (PCO) in Port Harcourt to ensure compliance with the SUPs ban and monitor its implementation.

According to the Project Coordinator, the move marks a significant step towards reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria’s public sector.

He said the group will implement and monitor compliance to this directive at the PCO.

Meanwhile, the Student Union Government (SUG) at the Rivers State University (RSU) Port Harcourt has flagged off an initiative to plant 100 trees and flowers in honour of Prof Zabbey, Project Coordinator of HYPREP.

The student body made the disclosure at the 8th Environment Summit held in the institution’s campus in Port Harcourt, where they also honoured the PC with an award.

The award was in recognition of the PC’s outstanding contributions and support towards environmental sustainability and advancing the interests of the students’ community and beyond.

Professor Zabbey, while commending the gesture, said it will help in climate change mitigation as it shows the commitment of the body to environmental sustainability, adding, that such collaboration with HYPREP attests to the power of collective action and reinforces citizens action to actualizing a cleaner environment in the region. The PC was represented at the event by Mr Charles Giniwa, TA on Administration
