Heavy-Flood Sweeps ‘Many Children’ Away In Mokwa Community
Floods reportedly swept away many children under Angwa Hausawa of the Mokwa Area Council of Niger State, North-Central, after a heavy rainfall which occurred Wednesday at midnight.
According to Mohammed, a community source who spoke to THE WHISTLER, the ravaging flood also destroyed properties worth millions of naira, including business buildings.
“Around Goodwill, the flood covered all the main roads of the Lagos-Kaduna highway. In my presence, five children were recovered in the flood,” he told THE WHISTLER. “About 4 little children died from the flood when they were rescued,” he added.
He further told THE WHISTLER that community members voluntarily swung into the flood to search for children in the flood, adding that many people were still missing.
Tanko Mohammed, a community source, said that his school teacher is still missing since the ravaging flood wreaked havoc in the area.
“Uncle Abdulmumeen, who teaches at Hakimi Aliyu, is also missing, including 8 children in one house,” he said, adding further that their house is located in the Unguwar Hausawa area in Mokwa.
“3 males and 2 females were recovered dead before I left the scene. A truck and a car, including an over-tan under the Mafuta area, were also destroyed by the flash flood,” he said.
When our correspondent visited the scene, the flash flood had receded during this reporter’s visit. But also, the flood also caused gridlock and travellers to be stranded.
Hussaini Ibrahim, the spokesperson of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), was not available for comment. Messages and WhatsApp messages sent to him remained unattended.
