President Bola Tinubu has described Pa Reuben Fasoranti as a symbol of courage and unwavering patriotism, and praised the Afenifere leader’s resistance against the tyranny of the late General Sani Abacha, as he turns 99.

“In Nigeria’s darkest hours of military dictatorship and tyranny unleashed by Late General Sani Abacha, Baba Fasoranti and his comrades at Afenifere and NADECO stood firm and unbowed. Baba and his colleagues’ resilience inspired and strengthened us, the younger ones,” President Tinubu said in a statement marking Pa Fasoranti’s 99th birthday.

Tinubu described Fasoranti’s resistance during the period as a defining example of patriotism and bravery.

He also noted the nonagenarian’s enduring impact across education, governance, and progressive politics.

“Baba has enjoyed extraordinary grace from God in attaining this age. Even when he appears frail due to old age, his mind remains active and sharp,” Tinubu said, adding that Fasoranti is “undoubtedly one of the rare Nigerians who gave all to public service and served unblemished at every opportunity.”

The president lauded Fasoranti’s career as a teacher and educationist and described his founding of Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School after retirement as evidence of his commitment to community development.

In politics, Tinubu said Fasoranti’s journey was rooted in Yoruba values of honour and integrity. He recalled his involvement in Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria, where he was a trusted ally of the late sage.

Tinubu also recalled Fasoranti’s role as Commissioner of Finance in the government of Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin in Ondo State (1979–1983), crediting his fiscal prudence for the successful implementation of the Unity Party’s cardinal programmes such as free education, healthcare, and rural development.

He praised Fasoranti’s strength of character in times of personal tragedy, guided by his Christian faith, and his continued mentorship to younger leaders.

Tinubu further reflected on his relationship with the Afenifere leader, recalling a visit during his presidential campaign three years ago. “I remain deeply grateful for his blessings, unflinching support and his belief in my vision for our country,” he said.

“I am happy he is alive to see the work we are doing to revamp our economy and set Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic growth and development,” Tinubu added.
