Gunmen operating in Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Wednesday, night shot a trader in his shop.

A source said the slain trader who operates a provisions shop with his wife was in his shop opposite Federal Polytechnic, Oko at about 9pm when the rampaging men arrived and shot him.

Though the man was thought to have died, the source said he was later revived after the gunmen left, that he was responding to treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

Mr Iyke Orji, a former student of Oko Polytechnic who confirmed the incident noted the benevolence of the trader through out his time at the Polytechnic.

He said: “The man is very well known to everyone who schooled in Oko Poly, he closes his shop very late everyday. He used to give us sachet water for free after playing football, while I was still in school.”

Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reiterated the Command’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in the state.

He has also urged residents, especially community leaders and youth groups, to support ongoing efforts by exposing criminal elements operating under the guise of self-government agitation.

In a press release by the state police command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command appealed for information from members of the public to nip crime in the bud.

Ikenga said: “Recent intelligence reports indicate that criminals now take advantage of the separatist sentiments to perpetrate violent crimes, including extortion, abduction, and targeted attacks on innocent citizens.

“The CP acknowledges the State’s historical pride of being peaceful, tolerant, innovative, industrious, and entrepreneurial.

“He therefore underscores the need for residents to help distinguish between legitimate advocacy and the activities of those exploiting unrest for personal gains.

“The safety and progress of Anambra lies in our collective resolve to say no to violence and criminality in any form,” the command said.
