Gunmen Kill Three, Burn Homes In Benue Community
Three people were killed and several others injured when gunmen invaded the Mbasombo community in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Wednesday night.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday, describing it as a deadly assault that left the village in ruins. Police Public Relations Officer SP Sewuese Anene told reporters that several houses were also razed during the attack.
“Three people were killed and some were injured while several houses were razed by the attackers. Security operatives have been deployed in the area,” Anene stated.
A survivor of the attack, John Terwase, said the assailants stormed the village under the cover of darkness, opening fire indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze.
He recounted that the attack began while most residents were asleep, and they initially thought the sounds were from thieves until the gunfire intensified.
“We ran with our children, some without shoes, into the night. I have not seen my younger brother since then,” Terwase said.
“This is a massacre, not just an attack. Our village is just a minute’s drive away from Makurdi, the state capital. If we are not safe here, where are we supposed to be safe?” he added.
The community, located on the outskirts of Makurdi, is predominantly a farming settlement.
