The Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) in Sokoto State has called on the state government to act decisively against the atrocities of bandits terrorising communities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, where fresh attacks have left scores dead.

The group, which has been tracking the incidents, said its figures were compiled within just four to five days, warning that the real death toll could be much higher.

“Based on available information, there may be more cases we are not yet aware of, we call on the Sokoto State Government to rise to the occasion and implement our recommendations to end these atrocities committed by Turji and his boys.

He said attacks, carried out by armed loyalists of the bandit leader Bello Turji, struck several communities between Wednesday, August 14, and Friday, August 16.

“On Wednesday, the attackers ambushed the Yankasuwa–Masawa road, intercepting vehicles and abducting all passengers.

“The following day, they invaded Garki village, where 16 residents were abducted; one was killed, another escaped, and three cows rustled”.

“By Friday, the gunmen stormed Turtsawa and Faru villages near Sabon Birni town, abducting 28 more people.

“Eyewitnesses said the assailants moved from one village to another, killing residents and spreading terror”.

The assaults claimed the lives of villagers and a security personnel, while many families remain in anguish searching for missing loved ones.

Community leaders condemned the attacks as “barbaric and heartless,” urging urgent intervention to halt the bloodshed in Sokoto’s eastern axis. Prayers have since been offered for the victims.
