Group decries incessant killings in Northern Nigeria

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has condemned what it called “heinous Killings in Northwest Nigeria”, particularly in Katsina and Zamfara states.

A statement issued by its National President, Isah Abubakar said, “We, the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, express our profound grief and outrage over the relentless and barbaric killings plaguing the North-Western part of Nigeria, particularly in Katsina and Zamfara states.”

He noted that the recent tragic events, including attacks on places of worship, were a testament to a shocking failure of leadership and a deep-seated institutional decay within the country’s security architecture.

The youths stated, “With bitterness and pain, we mourn the innocent lives lost and condemn the continued descent of our communities into a state of lawlessness and fear.

“The Northwest has become a human abattoir, where criminal elements, commonly referred to as bandits, operate with impunity, laying siege to villages, abducting our citizens, and desecrating our sacred spaces.”

Abubakar explained that the recent assault on a place of worship in Katsina State is a horrifying example of the escalating violence, saying that on 19th August, 2025, armed bandits stormed a mosque in Unguwar Mantau, killing at least 27 worshippers during morning prayers.

He stated that it was a calculated and brutal act of retaliation, as reported by local sources, following an earlier incident where villagers bravely defended their community.

“This is not an isolated event. Just days before, a Catholic church in the same state was attacked and desecrated.

“These heinous acts are not random occurrences; they are a direct consequence of a security leadership that has demonstrably failed to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians,” the statement explained.

The youths urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to bring on board committed and competent individuals who can truly help bring an end to this menace, saying that it is not a matter of politics but a matter of governance and the fundamental duty to protect human life.

“Neither political affiliations nor regional ties can justify the continued loss of life. The lives of the people are what matter, and their safety must be the President’s utmost priority.

”We cannot continue on this trend of daily killings and the gradual takeover of our communities.

“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in this demand for accountability and a decisive end to the bloodshed. The time for action is now,” the statement explained.
