Govt returns recovered stolen livestock to rightful owners in Taraba
The Taraba State Government has formally handed over a total of 65 cows, 73 sheep, 11 goats and three donkeys to their rightful owner after the animals were recovered from suspected cattle rustlers by operatives of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Jalingo.
The livestock,which were intercepted on July 1 at Mile Six in Jalingo en route to Karim Lamido local government council, were on Wednesday handed over to Alhaji Abubakar Audu of Toungo local government council of Adamawa State, who was announced as the rightful owner.
The decision, according to the government, arrived at after a thorough investigation by a committee set up by the state government.
The committee, constituted on July 2, 2025, was tasked with the responsibility verifying the circumstances surrounding the intercepted livestock and confirming ownership.
Speaking during the handover ceremony,
Dr Aminu Jauro Hassan, Chairman of Jalingo Local government council, who doubles as the state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, confirmed that a total of 138 cattle were originally recovered.
According to him, the remaining livestock are believed to belong to a suspect who is currently at large.
He urged individuals who may have lost cattle to rustling and possess credible evidence of ownership to as a matter of urgency reach out to the committee.
Overwhelmed by the gesture, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Alhaji Yau Ibrahim Barewa, applauded the state government and the Nigerian Army for their swift action.
