Govt Debunks Emergence Of Oba Of Yoruba Community In Enugu State
The news making the rounds that one Alhaji Abdulazeez Adebayo Olateju has been elected as the Oba of Yoruba community in Enugu State is not true.
The Enugu State government, through its Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, clarified this on Wednesday.
The ministry’s Head, Public Relations, Ifeoma Ogbuh, told our correspondent that the disclaimer became necessary following claims by one Mr Abdulazeez Adebayo Olateju that he was adopted as the Oba of Yoruba community in Enugu State.
Ogbuh said the ministry held a conflict resolution meeting with the Yoruba community stakeholders in Enugu State on 20th of August, 2024 on the Obaship issue, adding that, “No person was adopted during the meeting but a peace building process was initiated by the ministry.”
Our correspondent gathered that the meeting, presided over by the ministry’s Commissioner, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, had resolved to engage in further consultations to ensure a peaceful resolution of the Obaship crisis.
Ogbodo, it was gathered, warned that anybody parading himself as the Oba of Yoruba community in Enugu State should desist from doing so or face the wrath of the law.
Adebayo during the community’s meeting on Tuesday in Enugu claimed that he was chosen by Yoruba elders because of his “good record and good behaviour”.
He said, “Yoruba elders decided to bring a neutral person who is trusted and I was called upon to take the position. I came to Enugu on February 7, 1979, and since then, I have lived peacefully in the state.”
