Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State said his administration decided to declare a state of emergency on basic education following a thorough review of the challenges in the education sector across the state.

Governor Namadi made this known while responding after receiving the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, ASUP Honours Award for Most Outstanding Education-Friendly Governor of the Decade, at Government House, Dutse.

He said education lies at the heart of the state’s development agenda, and the decision followed a comprehensive review of the sector’s challenges. According to him, “Education is the bedrock for the development of any society, and we believe that an educated society is an enlightened society. For us, investment in education is not only important but also very necessary. Therefore, we have made a deliberate attempt to transform the education sector into a clearly defined policy priority.”

He continued, “So we made a deliberate decision to focus on strengthening the education sector, and we started across all segments, from basic to tertiary. At the basic level, after taking a comprehensive analysis of what was really on the ground, we discussed this extensively at the State Executive Council. At the end, we realized that there was a need to declare a state of emergency in basic education.

“While at the tertiary level, we made another tough but necessary decision, a complete overhaul of the leadership structures in all state-owned higher institutions.”

Governor Namadi thanked ASUP for the honour, stating that the award was a reflection of the collective efforts of his cabinet, civil servants, and the people of Jigawa State. He assured them of continued collaboration and invited them to provide feedback and constructive criticism.

Earlier, the state ASUP leadership, led by its chairman, Comrade Nuruddeen Abdullahi Yusuf, praised Governor Namadi for his visionary reforms, including the appointment of academics into key leadership roles and his numerous education-centred policies that continue to uplift lives across the state.
