Coco Gauff earned a 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-4 victory over world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the 2025 French Open on Saturday.

The American star produced a stunning performance to brush aside Sabalenka, winning her first-ever title at Roland Garros.

She recovered from a difficult start in the first set after trailing by a double break before finding her feet thanks to a series of mistakes by Sabalenka.

Gauff dominated the second set to earn a 6-2 victory to level the match. She maintained the momentum in the decider before sealing a 6-4 victory to emerge the champion of the tournament.

It was her second Grand Slam title after winning the U.S Open title in 2023.

Gauff became the first American woman to win the singles title since Serena Williams in 2015.

She was delighted to win her first-ever title at the Roland Garros, while crediting the crowd for cheering her on.

Gauff said: “I was going through a lot of things when I lost this final three years ago, so it means a lot to be back and here and to win.

“The crowd really helped me today, you guys were cheering for me so hard. I don’t know what I do to deserve so much love from the French crowd, but I appreciate you guys.

“I didn’t think, honestly, that I could do it. But I’m actually going to quote Tyler the Creator [American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer], right here. And he said, if I ever had a doubt…if I ever told you I had a doubt inside me, I must be lying. So I would like to leave that with you guys. I think I was lying to myself and I definitely could do it. So shout out to Tyler and shout out to you guys. Thank you. Paris.”

Meanwhile, Sabalenka apologised for her “terrible” performance in the final.

She said: “This will hurt so much, especially after such a tough two weeks playing great tennis in terrible conditions,” the Belarusian said as she stifled her sobs.

“Thank you to my team for the support, I’m sorry for this terrible final. As always I will come back stronger.

“Anyway, Coco congrats. In these tough conditions, you were a better player than me. Well done in a great two weeks. Congrats on the second slam. You’re a fighter. Hard worker. Congrats to you and your team.”

Gauff has won ten career singles titles, including two majors at the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open, as well as the 2024 WTA Finals.

She also won nine doubles titles, including the 2024 French Open.
