Fulani herdsmen allegedly attack Benue community

Suspected Fulani herdsmen have reportedly attacked Egwuma community in Ogwule Ogbawulu Ward of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The herdsmen allegedly opened fire on the people of the community on Thursday afternoon.

The invaders reportedly burnt houses and looted livestock and properties worth several millions of naira.

The incident was confirmed by the chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Mr Melvin Ejeh.

Ejeh, who reported the attack on his official Facebook page, condemned the dastardly attack on the community.

He said: “I have just been sadly informed of an attack on Egwuma community of Ogwule Ogbaulu Ward, which led to the burning of some houses and looting of livestock and properties worth millions of naira by suspected Fulani herdsmen and cattle rustlers

“I sympathise with the people of Egwuma and environs and call for calm as we are working non-stop to bring a lasting solution to this age-long crisis.

“We have called for the immediate deployment of security officials to the area to restore peace, but we are working on a long-term solution which will come to fruition soonest.

“My administration would prioritise and ensure the rebuilding of communities and the safe return of every Agatu citizen back home.

“Agatu is our home and no one would live as a displaced citizen in their ancestral home. I call for all of us to stay calm and united to confront this common monster.”

Ejeh, who spoke on the phone with DAILY POST, said no deaths were recorded in the attack and normalcy has returned to the community with the deployment of security agencies to the area.

The spokesperson of Benue State Police Command, SP Catherine Anene, could not be reached for confirmation of the incident as repeated calls to her telephone were unanswered.
