FRSC Warns Driving School Operators Against Sharp Practices
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has urged driving school operators to shun sharp practices and illegal activities that could endanger lives and compromise safety on Nigerian roads.
Mohammed gave the charge on Thursday at the 2025 national workshop for driving school proprietors and instructors held in Gombe State.
The workshop, themed “Entrenching Highway Safety in Nigeria Through Standardised Drivers and Riders Training,” brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to enhance professionalism and reduce road traffic crashes.
Represented by the Gombe State Sector Commander of the corps, Mr. Samson Kaura, the Corps Marshal stressed the important role of driving schools in shaping the safety culture on the nation’s highways.
“It is imperative for driving school operators to prioritise professionalism and improved road safety. The agency is strengthening the capacity of the operators while cautioning them against practices that could undermine safety on the roads,” Mohammed said.
He noted that through the Driving Schools Standardisation Programme (DSSP), the corps has been training and monitoring driving schools to enhance the quality, uniformity, and integrity of drivers’ education nationwide.
However, he expressed concern that many schools still fall short of the required standards.
“Some schools continue to cut corners, prioritising profit over safety. Others struggle with infrastructural deficits, regulatory compliance, and the professional development of their instructors,” he said.
Mohammed identified human-related errors as the leading cause of road crashes and said the workshop offered a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to collectively address these challenges.
He described driving school operators as “partners bound by a shared mission: to produce drivers and riders who value human life, obey traffic laws, and contribute positively to the national economy.”
He urged them to uphold the ethics and standards of the profession and to recognise their responsibility to society.
Also speaking at the event, Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, lauded the FRSC for its sustained efforts to instill discipline and safety consciousness among Nigerian drivers through the DSSP.
Represented by Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau, Yahaya advocated for mandatory drug testing among road users to further address reckless driving and enhance safety measures.
The Chairman of the Driving Schools Association in Gombe, Mr. Victor Akpan, also commended the FRSC for organising the training.
He noted that the workshop would significantly improve the standard of driver and rider training, particularly in the North East region and Nigeria as a whole.
No fewer than 80 driving school proprietors and instructors from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States participated in the workshop.
