Fourth Division Team, Grimsby Town Dump Man Utd Out Of League Cup

English fourth division side, Grimsby Town earned a stunning 12-11 penalty shootout victory over Manchester United to send the Red Devils out of the League Cup in the second round.

Grimsby Town raced to a 2-0 lead in the first half at Blundell Park as the visitors struggled to get their acts together despite Amorim starting the likes of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Amad Diallo.

Bryan Mbeumo reduced the deficit in the 75th minute with a low effort.

Harry Maguire restored parity for the Red Devils with a stunning header with a minute of the regulation time to go to send the game into penalty shootout.

Bryan Mbeumo missed his spot after a marathon shootout to give Grimsby Town an historic 12-11 victory, and a place in the second round of the competition.

Another new signing, Matheus Cunha had earlier missed in the shootout.

Grimsby Town midfielder Kieran Green described the victory as unbelievable.

He said, “It’s unbelievable. I think it’ll be one that’ll live in the history of this club for a long time. I know a lot of the fans were looking forward to it, we were looking forward to it, so it’s one that will stick around forever, I can imagine.

“I think that we went 2-0 up and everyone was probably surprised to be in that situation. I know they’ve come back from 2-2 and it’s two-all, let’s have it right, we’d have taken 2-2 at the death. So 2-2, them getting the equaliser at the end, we’re still the team winning at that point and we’d take that going into the end.

“Going into the penalty shoot-out, the gaffer said to us, ‘lads, all the pressure is on them’, and it was really.”

Up next for Manchester United is a Premier League clash against Burnley on Saturday while Grimsby Town will take on Bristol Rovers in the League Two on the same day.
