Four arrested over killing of NDLEA officer in Ondo raid
Police authorities in Ondo State have confirmed the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of a single-barrel firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of an officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in the state.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during a raid carried out by NDLEA operatives on a residential building in the Ita’nla area of Ondo town. The officer, attached to the Ondo Command of the agency, was reportedly shot while providing security during the operation.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the raid followed intelligence suggesting that illicit drugs had been hidden in the ceiling of the apartment. During the early-morning operation, some operatives reportedly entered the building to retrieve the substances, while the slain officer maintained watch outside.
It was during this time that unknown gunmen allegedly emerged and opened fire, striking the officer. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was confirmed dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adebowale Lawal, said in a telephone interview that swift action was taken following the attack.
“Following the incident, we immediately deployed reinforcements to the area. Four suspects have been apprehended and are currently in custody,” he stated.
Lawal added that a single-barrel firearm believed to have been used in the attack was recovered from the scene. He noted that the investigation is ongoing and assured that all suspects involved would be brought to justice.
The remains of the deceased NDLEA officer have since been deposited at the morgue.
