Flood Submerges Enugu Primary School
Early morning heavy downpour on Friday submerged the premises of Enugu Road Primary School, Nsukka, in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The school shares premises with St John Catholic Church, Nsukka. Both are located along Enugu-Nsukka expressway.
THE WHISTLER reports that the cause of the flooding was a blocked underground waterway, which had always rendered the expressway unmotorable whenever heavy downpour occurred.
A fence of the church had earlier been pulled down by the flood. Also businesses located along the affected areas have been shut, while those still operating face nightmares whenever rains fall.
“This has been our fear in this school,” says a parent whose child attends the school. “The school is about to resume, and the rain has not stopped. Whenever it rains, we are always in fear for the safety of our children. Some parents have relocated their children to other schools because of this ecological disaster. It has been happening for some years now, and nothing proactive is being done. The water floods the foundation, and nobody knows the extent of the destruction that might have happened to the school foundation.”
Mark Igwebe has a ward in the primary school. He said, “As PTA, we have appealed to the relevant authorities. Nsukka local government council tried to dig a borrow pit within the premises of the school for water storage, but that work seems not the solution. Even a wall of the church has cracked. The impact of the rain that fell this morning shows that all is not yet well. Why the state government has kept mute over this particular spot of the road is what I don’t know. Even the local government area pays lip service. Parents may consider changing schools for their children because safety is uppermost.”
A peep into the most affected block of the primary school showed that flood also spills into it. The management, it was gathered, had evacuated school chairs inside the block.
“Children are on holiday, but even before they closed for the third term, affected classes were shifted to other blocks that are safe. You can see that water floods the inside,” James Nwosu, a resident, said.
Aside the school premises, our correspondent gathered that the flood also caused havocs at some private houses. Ndidi resides at an affected building. She said, “The rain began this morning. Even before the intensity increased, the flood had started submerging our building. We are still evacuating the flood as you can see. We are tired of crying. When it pleases God, He shall come to our rescue.”
