Brazilian side Flamengo earned a stunning 3-1 win over Premier League giants Chelsea to boost their chances of qualifying for the FIFA World Club Cup second round.

The Felipe Luis-led side produced an impressive performance to brush Chelsea aside in Philadelphia.

Pedro Neto gave Chelsea an early lead with a clinical finish in the 13th minute but Flamengo kept pushing for an equaliser.

However, The Brazilian team came out of the second half with intent, and purpose as Chelsea struggled to contain them.

Bruno Henrique restored parity for Flamengo in the 62nd minute with a close range finish after Sanchez failed to handle Plata’s cross.

Three minutes later, Danilo made it 2-1 as Chelsea defenders failed to clear their lines before Nico Jackson was sent off for a dangerous tackle, a few minutes after coming on.

Wallace Yan put the icing on the cake to make it 3-1 to condemn Chelsea to their first defeat of the competition.

The result puts Flamengo three points clear of Chelsea in Group D. Maresca’s men need to beat ES Tunis on Tuesday to stand a chance of advancing to the next round.

Flamengo have now won their first two matches of the competition after their opening day win over ES Tunis.

South American clubs remain undefeated in the Club World Cup.

Flamengo coach, Luis Felipe was delighted to win against his former club.

He said: “I’m really happy. We believed that we would have chances and I am really proud. Bruno [Henrique] is special. It doesn’t matter if he plays one minute or 90, he always gives his heart.”

Felipe Luis played for Chelsea from 2014-2015 under Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca claimed the team tried to do something different while congratulating Flamengo.

He said: “We tried to do something different. Flamengo deserved it, congrats to them, that’s it. I think they deserved it.

In the other match of the day, Benfica earned a 6-0 win over Auckland City to go top of Group C.
