At least five people, including a 10-year-old girl, have died in three separate tragic incidents across Bichi, Danbatta and Nassarawa Local Government Areas of Kano State.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Saturday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, who described the occurrences as “deeply saddening and preventable.”

The first incident occurred in Badume Kanawa Village in Bichi LGA, where three men died while attempting to re-dig a well.

The victims were identified as 65-year-old Sa’idu Gada, his 20-year-old son, Sani Isyaku, and another man, 60-year-old Yakubu Abdullahi.

According to Abdullahi, the rope used by Gada while working inside the well snapped, leaving him trapped.

His son immediately descended into the well to rescue him, but failed to return. A third man later attempted to assist but also became trapped.

“Our men from the agency’s headquarters went to the scene of the incident. On arrival, they found three people working to re-dig a well. A rope accidentally was cut when the father was working inside the well,” he said.

Firefighters were able to retrieve the three victims unconscious, but they were later confirmed dead. Their bodies were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Badume Division, DSP Kabiru Iliyasu.

In a separate incident in Danbatta LGA, a boy identified as Hassan Iliyasu Haruna, aged about 10, fell into a well and died.

The third incident happened in Nassarawa LGA at Badawa Layin Day, where a fire outbreak claimed the life of another 10-year-old girl on Thursday, 4 December 2025.

Abdullahi said fire service personnel responded to the emergency at about 11:57 a.m., and on arrival found a residential building measuring 25 by 20 feet engulfed in flames. Two bedrooms were already “well alight.”

“A 10-year-old girl was trapped and rescued unconscious, but was later confirmed dead,” he stated.

Reacting to the string of incidents, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged residents to stop entering wells to rescue trapped persons, warning that such attempts often lead to multiple fatalities.

He appealed for increased caution and quick reporting of emergencies to prevent further loss of lives.
