A 56-year-old man was rescued alive after falling into an 80-foot well in the Ikotun area of Lagos, following a swift response by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service over the weekend.

The Ejigbo Fire Station received a distress call and immediately deployed a rescue team to House 12, Aiyeola Street, off Governor Road, Molad Bus Stop, Ikotun, within the Ikotun-Igando Local Council Development Area.

On arrival, officials discovered that the man had become trapped while working inside the well, which is located at the rear of a bungalow containing eight rooms on a 648-square-metre property.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Senior Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Maria Fadairo, the victim was successfully pulled out of the well alive through the coordinated efforts of the firefighters.

Preliminary investigations indicate that negligence may have played a role in the incident.

“The victim was successfully rescued alive through the coordinated efforts of the firefighters.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may have resulted from negligence,” Fadairo stated.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, urged residents to always notify the agency ahead of engaging in risky operations to ensure safety precautions are in place, including standby emergency support.

THE WHISTLER reports that this latest incident happened barely two weeks after a woman tragically lost her life after falling into a 170-foot-deep well at a construction site in the Ijegun area of Lagos.

Her body was recovered days later following a prolonged, multi-agency recovery operation.
