FG Urges Jebba, Lokoja Communities To Relocate As River Niger Level Rises
The National Flood Early Warning Center under the Federal Ministry of Environment has urged communities on the floodplain from Jebba in Kwara State to Lokoja, in Kogi State to relocate due to rising water levels of the River Niger.
In a statement signed by the Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani on Saturday, the ministry warned of heavy rainfall likely to lead to flooding in several locations across Nigeria from August 23 to August 24, 2025.
Affected states include parts of Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Yobe states.
The locations include; Benue State: Abinsi, Agyo, Gbagimba, Gogo, Makurdi, Mbapa, Otobi, Otukpo, Udoma, Ukpiam; Borno State: Briyel, Dikwa, Maiduguri and Gombe State: Bajoga, Dogon Ruwa, Gombe, Nafada.
Other locations include, Kebbi State: Gwandu, Jega, Kamba; Nasarawa State: Agima, Keana, Keffi, Odogbo, Rukubi; Niger State: Lapai and Yobe State: Gashua, Gasma, Potiskum.
The Ministry called for feedback for stakeholders and state government representatives.
“Relevant stakeholders should kindly take note. National Flood Early Warning Center (FEWS CENTER), Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja.
“Note: Feedback from the relevant stakeholders and State Government representatives on this platform will be highly appreciated,” the statement said.
Recall that the ministry had earlier disclosed heavy rainfall which could lead to flooding in various areas across 15 states around August 10 to August 14, 2025.
The states include Adamawa State, Bauchi State, Kaduna State, Nasarawa State, Katsina State ,Kebbi State, Kano State, Niger State, Taraba State, Jigawa State, Yobe State, Zamfara State, Sokoto State, Borno State and Kwara State.
