FG Probes Incident After Students Write WAEC Exam With Torchlights
The Ministry of Education has commenced an immediate investigation into an alleged incident at Unity Secondary School in Asaba, Delta State, where students sat for a West African Examination Council (WAEC) examination under poor lighting conditions, reportedly using torchlights due to a power outage.
The incident, which was captured on video and shared on social media, shows students sitting for the exam in a poorly lit classroom with a torchlight providing the only source of light.
A woman is heard condemning the officials for subjecting the students to such an unconducive environment.
The Federal Ministry of Education has described the incident as “totally unacceptable” and has pledged to work with the Delta State Government and WAEC to investigate the matter and take corrective action.
It further stated that the outcome of the investigation will be made public as necessary.
According to the ministry, the investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
“The Ministry is committed to the effective deployment of infrastructure and the provision of a conducive environment to promote education in the country, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the education sector,” said Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, in a statement on Saturday.
The ministry has assured stakeholders that it will do everything possible to ensure that students are provided with a suitable environment to sit for their examinations without any challenges.
