FG Places Benue, Niger, Nine Others On Flood Alert, Urges Evacuation

The National Flood Early Warning Center, under the Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 11 states across Nigeria, warning of potential flooding due to heavy rainfall expected between September 14th and 18th, 2025.

The affected states include Adamawa, Benue, Delta, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara.

According to the warning, specific locations in these states are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding.

The locations include Ganye and Natu in Adamawa State; Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, and Ukpam in Benue State; Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, and Okpo-Kinka in Delta State; Gwarzo and Karaye in Kano State; Jibia in Katsina State; Rijau in Niger State; Ribah in Kebbi State; Makira in Sokoto State; and Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, and Bungudu in Zamfara State.

Additionally, communities along the floodplains of River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger are advised to evacuate due to rising water levels.

Specifically, communities along River Gongola up to Numan, River Benue, and River Niger up to Lokoja are at risk.

The Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdultahi Bokani in a statement on Sunday, urged relevant stakeholders to take note of the warning.

The National Flood Early Warning Center also requested feedback from stakeholders and state government representatives.
