FG, Kaduna Vow To Crash Maternal, Neo-natal Mortality

The National Coordinator of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), Dr. Dayo Adeyanju has said that the Federal Government Initiative is working in collaboration with the state governments to crash maternal, neonatal mortality in 172 local government areas across the country.

THE WHISTLER reports that the initiative, in collaboration with the Kaduna State government, aims to address the high mortality rates in seven local government areas of the state.

The Federal Ministry of Health through the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) handed over a co-created intervention report designed to address maternal mortality to the Kaduna State government.

The National Coordinator, MAMII, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, presented the report to the Kaduna State Government after a four-day workshop on how to tackle the menace in the state on Thursday.

Adeyanju while speaking with newsmen shortly after the workshop, disclosed that about seven LGAs in Kaduna State alone have the highest rate of the mortality.

He explained that a document has been prepared at the workshop and handed over to Kaduna State government for action on crashing the mortality.

He said, “In the last four days, we have worked together with the state in line with the compact site between the federal government and State government to co-create a solution, a silt of intervention to see to the crashing of maternal mortality in Kaduna State.

“This is because Kaduna, in line with the MAMII strategy, is looking at where women are dying, and before now, 172 LGAs in Nigeria had been identified, and Kaduna has about 7 of those LGAs.

“We have gone to see from day one when we discussed the MAMII with the State government, and on day two, we had to go to the field to look at the drivers of maternal death to ensure that women can have access to the care that is being provided.

“There is proper coordination in alignment with stakeholders. These are all the things we have done in the last four days, and the document is ready. The taskforce has been inaugurated by the Honourable Commissioner of Health. We are presenting this document to top government functionaries for action.

“We must commend the political will in Kaduna State because, from the deputy governor who represented the governor to the commissioner and the entire workforce, we say this is good. We are hopeful that with this document, it will be a journey on the pathway to crashing maternal mortality in Kaduna State.”

Also, speaking to newsmen shortly after the event, the Commissioner of Health, Ummah Ahmed, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the state.

“As you have seen the commitment of Kaduna State from the governor’s sustained manifestoes where the governor clearly indicated his passion to address child and maternal mortality rate in Kaduna State.

“I want to assure Mr. President who initiated this as well as the coordinating Minister of health and the federal ministry of health that Kaduna is committed to crashing maternal and neonatal mortality in the State very soon by the special grace of God,” she said.

She emphasized that the state government has shown its commitment through various initiatives, including the overhaul of health facilities and the recruitment of 2000 health workers.

She added that the state government has upgraded primary health centers to secondary health facilities and completed a 300-bed facility hospital.

This, she said, demonstrated the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.

“You have seen the governor upgrading from the primary health centre to the secondary health facilities as well as completing 300-bed facility hospital in the State.”

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, at a meeting held at Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, received a roadmap report on ending maternal mortality from the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), Coordinator, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju.

The Deputy Governor also emphasized the state’s commitment to reducing maternal deaths, stating, “Kaduna is committed to reducing maternal deaths, and I hope the Ministry of Health will also put in the necessary effort to see this through.”
