FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, a national public holiday to observe Democracy Day.
The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement issued by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior.
According to the statement, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government and extended congratulations to citizens.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured.
“The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope renewed than ever,” he said.
Mr Tunji-Ojo reiterated the commitment of the Renewed Hope government of President Bola Tinubu to the universal value of democracy that is based on freely-expressed will of the people in determining Nigeria’s political, economic, social and cultural systems.
In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari approved June 12 to replace May 29 as Democracy Day.
The holiday commemorates the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.
That election, which indicated a victory for Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was annulled by the military ruler, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
