The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has declared Tuesday, 15 July, a public holiday to honour the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
The minister also announced the continuation of the seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu.
Tunji-Ojo made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government after receiving the president’s approval.
He explained that the holiday serves as a mark of respect for the late president’s national service, contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, and lasting legacy in governance and national growth.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity in line with his vision for a prosperous and united country.
As previously announced, the national flags will fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, starting from Sunday, 13 July 2025.
The Federal Government also extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Buhari died in London at about 4:30 p.m. after battling a prolonged illness, according to an official statement from the presidency.
He served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 after a distinguished career in the military, including a brief stint as head of state from 1983 to 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and eight children.
