FG Begins Emergency Repairs On Lagos-Abeokuta Road

The Federal Government has begun emergency repairs on the deteriorated sections of the Lagos-Sango-Otta-Abeokuta road, providing long-awaited relief to motorists and commuters after years of neglect.

This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

According to Orji, the reconstruction of the damaged sections is being carried out by the government in collaboration with the road concessionaire.

“The road has been bad for some time, and the Federal Ministry of Works is bringing relief on the dilapidated sections in conjunction with the concessionaire,” Orji stated.

He further explained that the repairs are part of a broader strategy under the ‘Operation Free Our Roads’ initiative, which aims to improve federal road infrastructure across the country.

He said, “The Federal Ministry of Works under the watch of Engr David Umahi is committed to providing relief to motorists and commuters on all the federal roads nationwide.

“With these emergency repairs underway, the government aims to restore smooth transit for the thousands who rely on this vital route daily.”

The 81-kilometre expressway, which links Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, to Ikeja, the capital of Lagos, is one of Nigeria’s busiest inter-state roads, handling approximately 250,000 Passenger Car Units (PCU) daily.

However, a large portion of the road has been in a deplorable condition, causing a decline in business activity, increasing vehicle maintenance costs, and endangering the lives of road users.

For example, the section of the road from Meiran to the Toll Gate has been particularly problematic, creating stress for both commuters and motorists.
