The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has commiserated with the family of a 25-year-old labourer who lost his life following the collapse of a building at an excavation site within the Radio House premises, Area 8, Garki, Abuja.
The incident happened around 5:50 p.m. on Monday, when a section of the foundation wall collapsed as labourers were excavating approximately seven feet below ground level, a statement by Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs of the department, disclosed on Tuesday.
The Head of the FEMD Search and Rescue Team, Mr. Monday Adie, who confirmed the incident, said two workers were trapped under the rubble.
“One of the victims was rescued alive, but unfortunately, the other was fatally injured,” he explained.
He added that the Federal Fire Service responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at about 5:50 p.m. and immediately mobilised personnel for the rescue operation.
In his reaction, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed described the incident as avoidable, stressing the need for strict compliance with safety standards at construction sites.
“This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of adherence to safety regulations and the use of qualified professionals in the building sector. Developers must shun quacks to prevent needless loss of lives,” Mohammed said.
He further urged residents to promptly report emergencies using the toll-free number 112, assuring that the department remains committed to quick disaster response across the territory.
