A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday as a female driver lost her life after her vehicle plunged into the Lagos lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service on Sunday, the incident took place at approximately 05:11 a.m. near the RRS (Rapid Response Squad) Checkpoint on the bridge, inward Iyana Oworo, Ebute Meta.

The vehicle involved was a Toyota Camry with the registration number LSR 384 BE, occupied solely by the driver.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the 29-year-old woman was recovered lifeless from the lagoon following a rescue operation.

She added that the body was handed over to the Nigeria Police and the victim’s family after recovery.

“It is a self accident involving a toyota camry car with registration number LSR 384 BE that plunged into the lagoon with a lone occupier as the driver,” Adeseye said.

“A 29 years old female body was recovered lifeless from the river and handed over to the Police and Family,”

Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including the Ebute Elefun Crew of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Amber Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the Marine Department of the Nigeria Police, and local volunteers.

The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

THE WHISTLER reports that two passengers onboard a 20-seater bus plunged into the lagoon, while 18 others escaped death when a commercial bus had a lone accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in April 2024.

The bus was reportedly traveling at high speed before the driver lost control as a result of brake failure.

The bus almost fell into the lagoon, but was stopped by the rail of the bridge.

The 18 passengers who sustained serious injuries were rescued by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
