The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to deploy a hybrid street lighting system on major roads in Abuja, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway, as part of efforts to improve road safety and visibility across the city.

This deployment is one of several projects lined up as part of activities marking the second-year anniversary of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. To commemorate, the FCTA scheduled 19 days of project commissioning beginning June 10, 2025.

The decision was part of the resolutions reached at the 14th Executive Committee meeting of the FCTA held on Monday and chaired by the minister.

According to a statement by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the projects lined up for commissioning include key infrastructure across various parts of the territory.

Olayinka said the newly renovated Abuja International Conference Centre, the bus terminals in Kugbo and Mabushi, and the Apo-Wassa Road.

Others are the N16 Interchange and roads connecting Maitama through Katampe to Jahi, the Inner Northern Expressway from Ring Road 3 (Idu to Kubwa Road), CN8 from N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way) to the Court of Appeal, N20 Flyover on Onnex Kubwa Road, and the stretch from Life Junction to Ring Road III.

Also scheduled for commissioning are the Kabulsa-Takushara and Kabusa-Ketti access roads, an access road in Giri District, a 15km road from A2 Junction (Abuja-Lokoja Road) to Pai in Kwali Area Council, and roads in Bwari Area Council, including those in Ushafa, War College, and the Army Checkpoint.

The FCT Executive Committee approved the award of a contract for the upgrade of streetlights along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway, also known as Ring Road I.

Mr Richard Dauda, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), said the project was among seven approved memos submitted by the FCDA for consideration.

He explained that the 14-kilometre, 10-lane expressway from Maitama to Gudu has been in darkness due to outdated lighting infrastructure installed nearly two decades ago.

“If you pass there in the night, you will realise that most parts of the road are in darkness. The streetlights have been there for close to 15 years now. The project was completed between 2005 and 2006, and the lights have become obsolete and no longer bright enough to light the road,” Dauda said.

He added that the upgrade is necessary due to advancements in lighting technology and that a hybrid street lighting system would be deployed to brighten the road and make it more secure and motorable at night.
