FCT Schools Reopen As Teachers Call Off Strike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced the suspension of its strike action following the payment of five months’ salary arrears to teachers.

The strike, which started in March, had disrupted academic activities in primary schools across the FCT.

In a communique signed by Chairman Abdulahi Shafas and Secretary Margaret Jethro, the union directed teachers to return to classrooms and resume their duties.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the union stated.

The union expressed gratitude to FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike for his prompt intervention, which facilitated the payment of arrears.

The minister had previously summoned a meeting with stakeholders on Thursday, July 3, resulting in a decision for the six Area Councils to allocate 10 percent of their FCT Internally Generated Revenue to support the payment.

As part of the agreement reached between the government and the NUT, FCT wing, the government disbursed N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue to help settle the teachers’ wages and clear a portion of the outstanding arrears.

The union further disclosed that a special committee will be established within two weeks to reconcile the outstanding entitlements and develop a plan for sustainable funding.

However, the union warned that if the government fails to uphold its commitments under the agreement, the strike will resume without hesitation.

The NUT thanked organisations and individuals who supported them during the strike, including prayers from Royal Fathers and teachers.

The union also appreciated the efforts of those who stood by them during this period.

It directed its members to return to the classroom on Wednesday (today).
