FCT Extends School Calendar After Teachers’ Strike

The Acting Executive Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB), has announced an extension of the primary school calendar by five weeks to bridge the academic gap created by the recent teachers’ strike.
Recall that the FCT Primary School teachers embarked on an indefinite strike on March 24, 2025, which was called off on July 9, 2025, following the intervention of the Honourable Minister of the FCT.
In a letter dated July 23, 2025, Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB, Dr. Alhassan Sule, stated that to make up for the lost time, the Honourable Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has approved the extension of the primary school calendar from Monday, July 28, to Friday, August 29, 2025.
Additionally, Sule stated that primary 4-6 pupils will have an extra period added to their daily schedule.
Sule urged the Education Secretaries in the six area councils of the FCT; Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, Kwali, and Gwagwalada to strictly adhere to the new calendar and communicate it to all head teachers of public primary schools in the FCT.
The letter stated in parts, “You may wish to recall that the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday, 24th March.,2025 and it was called off on Wednesday, 9th July, 2025 after the intervention of the Honourable Minister, FCT.
“Owing to the aforementioned development, there was an academic gap for the learners and to bridge the gap created, the Honourable Minster, FCT has approved the followings: Extension of primary school calendar by five (5) weeks from Monday 28 July-Friday 29th August,2025; and
“Extension of one period a day for primary 4-6 pupils only. Accordingly, you are to strictly adhere to the above directive and communicate to all Head Teachers of Public Primary Schools in the FCT.”
