FCT: 3-Year-Old Drowns, Police Probe Negligence
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation into a case of negligence after a three-year-old girl drowned while attempting to fetch water.
The FCT command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Tuesday said preliminary findings showed that the toddler was left at home under the care of a ten-year-old child when the incident occurred.
She reportedly fell into a mini water container and drowned.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case for a thorough probe.
He noted that the case will subsequently be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal review.
CP Disu urged parents and guardians to take full responsibility for their children’s safety, and stressed that young children should never be left unsupervised.
He warned that negligence leading to preventable tragedies will be met with legal consequences.
“CP Disu strongly advises parents and guardians to take full responsibility for the safety and well-being of their children. He emphasizes that children should never be left without proper adult supervision, as such negligence can lead to unfortunate and preventable incidents,” the statement partly read.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children, and vowed to take decisive action against cases of parental neglect.
