FAAN Resumes Direct Cargo Revenue Collection at Lagos Airport After 15 Years
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reinstated direct revenue collection at the cargo terminals of Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) for the first time in over 15 years.
This development was announced in a statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, and shared via the authority’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
As part of the initiative, FAAN personnel from the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services (DCDS) have been deployed to the cargo release points at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) warehouses. Their role will include real-time monitoring and collection of all applicable cargo charges.
According to the statement: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has recorded a landmark achievement with the successful resumption of direct revenue collection at the cargo terminals of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after a 15-year hiatus.
“For the first time in over a decade, FAAN officials from the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services (DCDS) are now stationed at the cargo release points of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) warehouses to oversee real-time collection of accrued cargo charges.”
FAAN explained that this milestone follows extensive stakeholder consultations led by Mr. Lekan Thomas, Director of Cargo Development and Services, in collaboration with the Airport Manager, Mr. Olatokubo Arewa.
The reform also received strong backing from a high-level meeting between FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
By working closely with the PTC Customs Area Command under Comptroller T. Awe, FAAN expects this move to curb revenue leakages and strengthen accountability within the air cargo ecosystem. The agency further expressed optimism that the success at MMIA will serve as a benchmark for implementation at other airports nationwide, as part of its drive to enhance cargo operations and grow revenue.
