Existing commitments may hinder opposition merger talks – Dayo Kayode
Political analyst, Dr. Dayo Kayode has warned that existing political commitments and rival ambitions could complicate efforts to realign Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of future elections.
Speaking during an interview on Voice of the People TV, Kayode said several key figures in the opposition already have ties and promises that may make it difficult for them to work together.
“Don’t forget that Peter Obi has been one of the pillars of the coalition of opposition parties that moved into ADC,” he said, pointing to the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s previous involvement in opposition alliances.
The analyst also reminded people of earlier remarks made by former President Goodluck Jonathan regarding conditions for returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“Don’t forget that along the line, GEJ said if anybody wants him to come to PDP, they should also go and appeal to Atiku to come to PDP. Are you also aware of that?” he noted.
Dr. Kayode added that while possible collaborations between opposition leaders might not be surprising, they are not necessarily game-changing.
“So you see, for them coming together, to me it’s not a big deal. Life goes on,” he said.
However, he highlighted internal struggles within the PDP as another obstacle to unity.
