Former Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has joined Cyprus topflight side Aris Limassol on a one-year deal ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Balogun left Scottish side Rangers at the end of the season after his contract expired in his second spell at the club.

The 36-year-old made 20 appearances for Rangers in the Scottish League last season as they finished second behind Celtic.

Aris Limassol confirmed Balogun’s signing with a statement on their website on Friday.

The statement read: “Aris Limassol announces a one-year cooperation agreement with German-Nigerian Leon Balogun!” the club announced.

“The 36-year-old (28/06/1988) central defender was acquired as a free agent as his contract with Rangers Scotland expired.

“This is a footballer with performances from top leagues, such as the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga, as well as participation in the 2018 World Cup.

“Balogun was born in Berlin and made his first steps in football there with Hertha. In the 2008–09 season he moved to Hannover 96, where he made his Bundesliga debut.

“The 1.90m tall defender played 29 times in European competitions, scoring two goals. We welcome Leon to our team and wish him every success with the Aris jersey!”

Balogun made his Super Eagles debut in 2014 against Mexico in an international friendly as a replacement for Joseph Yobo.

He played 46 games for the Super Eagles , scoring one goal, and in addition to his participation in the 2018 World Cup.

He was also part of the team that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Balogun was born in Berlin, West Germany to a Nigerian-Yoruba father, and a German mother.

Aris Limassol finished second behind Pafos in the Cyprus League last season.
