EU, UN Launch Over N100bn Projects In Sokoto To Tackle Healthcare Crisis
The European Union (EU), in collaboration with United Nations agencies and the Nigerian government, has launched three major development initiatives valued at over N100bn (€60m) to strengthen the country’s healthcare and social protection systems.
The projects launched at a high-level event held at the presidential lodge in Sokoto are designed to enhance access to reproductive and adolescent health services, build sustainable social protection systems, and provide humanitarian support for displaced populations.
The initiatives will run from 2024 to 2027 and focus primarily on underserved communities across Nigeria.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, led a delegation of eight other EU ambassadors representing Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, and Germany.
The event also featured top UN representatives, including UNICEF Nigeria Representative Cristian Munduate, ILO Country Director Dr Vanessa Phala, UNFPA Resident Representative Dr Gifty Addico, and Danish Refugee Council Country Director Pierre Mendiharat.
During a courtesy visit to Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu, represented by his deputy, Idris Gobir, Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to working closely with state and traditional institutions.
He noted that the delegation would engage religious and traditional leaders, visit Usmanu Danfodiyo University, and tour project sites across the state.
Governor Aliyu welcomed the initiatives, stating that the EU-backed projects align with Sokoto State’s 9-point Smart Innovative Agenda.
“These projects are timely and targeted. They directly address our key priorities in healthcare, social welfare, and the protection of vulnerable populations,” he said.
He added that the SARAH (Strengthening Access to Reproductive and Adolescent Health) programme complements the state’s provision of free maternal and child healthcare and the ongoing renovation of health facilities across Sokoto.
At the Sultan’s Palace, the ambassador met with Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, who lauded the EU’s commitment to development and humanitarian support.
“Your presence sends a strong message against those who misrepresent our country. These projects aim to uplift the most vulnerable, and we fully support them,” the Sultan said.
In his goodwill message at the launch, the Sultan cautioned the state government to use the funds wisely and pledged the cooperation of traditional and religious leaders to ensure the success of the programmes.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Mignot emphasised that the EU’s investments are aimed at inclusive, long-term development: “We are proud to partner with Nigeria on programmes that leave no one behind, improving healthcare, social protection, and resilience.”
UNICEF’s Cristian Munduate echoed this commitment, stressing the importance of building resilient systems: “Social protection is a lifeline for families. Through SARAH, and in partnership with the ILO, UNFPA, and DRC, we are helping Nigeria build systems that protect every child.”
The €60 million investment aligns with Nigeria’s National Development Plan and is expected to significantly improve outcomes for women, children, and displaced populations affected by conflict and climate change.
